Why You Should Trust Me

Why should you trust me? As I mentioned in the beginning, I have three electric roaster ovens. I purchased the first one under duress and it gave me the baking space I needed to enjoy the holiday. I purchased the second roaster because I loved the first one and I realized I could also purchase and benefit from the buffet accessories. I purchased the third smaller roaster oven for my husband’s preparation of Italian Chili. He enjoys creating and sharing this chili with family or at office celebrations.  He is able to brown the meat, sauté the vegetables and cook all ingredients in this little roaster oven. Where as, prior to this, he was prepping everything on the stove and placing the ingredients into a slow cooker to complete. The roaster oven is just much easier.

Over the holidays, we prepare prime rib in one roaster oven and crab legs in the other roaster oven (somewhere outside of the house ^^). We let the prime rib rest on the cutting board while we prepare the au jus, slice the prime rib and return it to the cleaned roaster oven. We remove the crab to a serving platter, clean the roaster oven, insert the buffet accessories and fill them with the prepared side dishes. Done and done! Thanksgiving is basically the same routine but with all of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes.

Roaster ovens are not limited to holiday use. I now have an oven and a half in my kitchen and the roaster ovens remain vital appliances for my meal preparations and entertaining throughout the year.

What to Look for In an Electric Roaster Oven

maxresdefaultThere are a couple of common elements in all of the roaster ovens on our list. The maximum temperature is 450 degrees, they will all have very short cords as a safety precaution and they all have the enamel on steel cook wells. Several brands offer accessories such as buffet service inserts, additional lid options and replacement parts. Let’s take a closer look at the important design features of the electric roaster ovens.

The Size of the Roasting Pan

As you can see in our list, the Oster CKSTR23-SB, the Hamilton Beach 32229 and the Proctor Silex 32230A are 22-quart roaster ovens. 22-quarts is a very large roaster. The Oster description states it will hold a 26-pound turkey, the Hamilton Beach holds a 24-pound turkey and the Proctor Silex holds an 18-pound turkey.

The remaining roaster ovens listed are all 18-quarts except for one 16-quart. I own two Nesco 18-quart roaster ovens and one 6-quart Nesco roaster oven. The 18-quart ovens are large enough to prepare large quantities of food without being unmanageable in size and weight. It is necessary to consider the roaster oven dimensions and your storage options prior to purchasing. Will it fit on your counter top or do you need table space for your roaster oven?

The Cook Well Material

All of the roaster ovens reviewed have removable enamel on steel cook wells. The enamel on steel allows for optimum heat distribution and heat retention. Most of the descriptions state that the cook wells are dishwasher safe. I have found the enamel cook well very easy to clean without using dishwasher space.

The Lid

The high dome lids are helpful when roasting a large turkey, tall ham or roast as they fit nicely over the meat. The Oster brand offers a high dome lid as an added purchase for all sizes except the 22-quart roaster oven. The Nesco roasters on our list all come with a high dome lids.

Temperature Options

All of the roaster ovens on our list reach a maximum temperature of 450 degrees. All brands, except the Nesco, can be set at a low 150 degrees. I am very happy with my Nesco roasters, however, there are times when having the option to set the temperature to 150 degrees would be advantageous.

Other Uses

All of the brands offer the buffet inserts as an added purchase. I would highly recommend this additional purchase. We use our buffet sets for taco bars, side dishes, au jus and gravy, breakfast buffets, party appetizers etc. It is a feature that we enjoy and use often.

The Oster CKSTROSMK 18-Quart model is very unique in that it is a smoker/roaster. This particular roaster does not have the buffet set option, however, the fact that it is a smoker is an appealing bonus. It includes the removable chip holders. The temperature settings are a perfect 150 degrees to 450 degrees and the size is generous for at-home smoking and roasting. My family loves smoked salmon. My husband prepares small amounts in the tiny smoker he owns. This would be a nice alternative, allowing him to prepare larger portions of smoked meat without having to invest a lot of money or provide much additional storage space.

The Best Electric Roaster Oven on the Market

We have to consider the size and function of the roaster ovens to determine the best option. The 22-quart size is very large. The general rule of thumb for estimating the size of a turkey and number of servings is one pound of meat per serving which includes the weight of the bones. Envision a 26-pound turkey serving approximately 26 people.

Surprisingly, the dimensions of the 22-quart roasters and the dimensions of the18-quart roasters are similar. My first thought had been that the 22-quart roaster would be much too large and the 18-quart roaster is a much more reasonable size. However, after considering the similar dimensions, I believe the 22-quart size is a great choice.

If money were not an issue, I would recommend the Oster CKSTRS23-SB 22-Quart Roaster Oven. First of all, this roaster is a nice, versatile 22-quart capacity. It will easily roast up to a 26-pound turkey. There is an abundant amount of space to beautifully accomplish roasting a turkey of this size.

Why would I recommend the Oster over the brand I currently own? The Oster roaster oven has a low temperature option of 150-degrees. One reviewer commented: “The 200 degree temperature of the Nesco may still be too high for some dishes.”  I have to agree with that statement. There are times when I have wished to set my roasters at 150 degrees. This temperature option is advantageous.

in fineThis Oster roaster oven is made with the self-basting lid. I much prefer the self-basting lid rather than the low clearance lid, as it is helpful when roasting larger turkeys and roasts. It sits up away from the meat allowing better heat circulation. The extra clearance allows the lid to rest firmly on the roaster without a tall roast or turkey becoming an obstruction. The Nesco 18-Quart also includes a high dome self-basting lid.

A buffet set insert is an additional option with the Oster roaster. Purchasing the buffet set adds to the versatility. Serving buffet style meals, serving and warming side dishes or serving gravy and au jus are examples of utilizing the buffet set. The buffet set includes three containers each with a 2.1-quart capacity.  They are non-stick and clean up quickly. As a comparison, the Nesco buffet containers are each a 2.75 quart capacity.

Cookies, pies, cakes, breads and muffins can be baked in this roaster. A baking rack is included and your baking pans can be placed directly on the rack. After harvesting apples from your apple tree this fall, quickly make one large batch of applesauce rather than smaller, time consuming quantities on your stove. Prepare one large quantity of caramel popcorn, granola or glazed nuts over the holidays.

The porcelain enamel finish of the cook well can be cleaned easily by adding hot water and heating for 30 minutes to loosen debris. Once cooled, wash with soap and water. The instructions do state that the cook well is dishwasher safe, however, it’s quite large and perhaps easier to wash by hand.

The Oster company states that the 22-quart roaster uses 36% less energy and cooks your food 30% faster that your oven. The updated stainless steel finish is also a nice feature.

The dimensions of the Oster 22-quart roaster are just a bit smaller and it is also lighter in weight than the Hamilton Beach 32229 22-quart roaster. One last difference between the highly rated Hamilton Beach and the Oster is the lid. As I mentioned previously, the Oster model comes with the domed lid as opposed to the Hamilton Beach, which has a lower clearance lid.

The Rival RO180 18-Quart Roaster oven is another highly rated roaster oven. At half the cost of the others in the 18-quart category, you can’t go wrong with this purchase. It has all of the great attributes of your regular oven at a fraction of the energy cost. It is a perfect size for medium to large volumes of roasting or baking.

It is designed with the domed lid that allows for better heat circulation.

This particular roaster oven also offers a low 150-degree temperature setting, allowing you to gently keep food warm. As with the other models from our review list, the high temperature of this model reaches 450-degrees. 450 degrees is essential when searing a roast such as prime rib. After searing, the temperature can be lowered to continue with a slow roast. You will appreciate the versatility of this temperature range.

whtfRival also offers the BR400 Foldable/Stackable server set as and added purchase option. This is their version of the buffet server I have mentioned several times. The Rival server set has a unique design as one section is a large container and two sections are small containers. The server set also includes plastic lids for storage, is non-stick and dishwasher safe. The description states it fits most 18-quart roaster ovens. I am very happy with my buffet inserts and would highly recommend this additional purchase.

In Conclusion

At this point you may or may not be convinced that you should buy an electric roaster oven, but you have to remember, some of our top choices cost just little over what a raw turkey costs, and yet the difference in taste between a perfect roast and a dry one are priceless. And we still have 2 more alternatives for you below, but before you go on to that, just remember that we have also compiled a list of the best electric roaster ovens accessories on the market today.

It is important to note that there are several other highly rated models on our list worth considering. The Hamilton Beach 32229 is actually one of the highest rated roaster ovens on Amazon. It is a beautiful 22-quart stainless steel model. A reviewer commented on the generous capacity. This model also offers the desirable 150-degree low temperature setting. I was unable to find a buffet set for the 22-quart roaster, however, their 18-quart roaster offers a 2.1-quart enamel buffet insert.

I personally own two Nesco 4818-14 18-Quart Classic Roasters. The 18-quart roasters are designed with the efficient high dome lid. The generous capacity of the optional buffet set is an added benefit to this model. We have had great success with our Nesco Roasters. The 4818-25PR is a stainless steel 18-quart version similar to the Classic model. The Nesco roasters require a “burn off” prior to their first use. It is important to do this outside or in the garage.

The Proctor Silex 32230A 22-Quart Stainless Steel Roaster Oven is also on our list. This roaster is designed with the 150 degree to 450 degree heating range. The Amazon page does say that there is a buffet insert available to purchase, however, I was only able to find the Proctor Silex buffet insert designated for their 18-quart roaster.

When you purchase your roaster oven, remember to read all of the directions. Each brand is somewhat unique. Your happiness and success with your roaster oven will be improved by understanding how to prepare it and how to use it correctly.
